New Eats: Alejandro's Mexican Food

Picture
You'd never know it but something special, delicious and hard to find has made it's way to Kalihi Valley. Authentic Mexican food is now just a few minutes away from my house! What a blessing. I must have done something good in another life to be surrounded by the best in poke (Alicia's), Hawaiian food (Helena's), Shave Ice (Shimazu Store), Garlic Chicken (Sugoi), LauLau (Young's) and more -- now add to the list an oh so flavorful, fresh, authentic, LA-style Mexican eatery that serves up delightful tacos, burritos, quesadillas and more. Welcome Alejandro's to my hood!

What once started on the street corner in Waikiki, during the late night hours, is now open Thursday - Saturday 12pm-8pm ONLY. The place is small, hot and simple, but the food is outstanding and it's only 5 minutes away from my casa. Alejandros can still be found during the overnights (1am-4:30am on Kuhio and Nohonani) near Playbar in Waikiki if you craving a tasty taco at 1am, but for us working and family folk we can stop here for lunch or dinner on those select nights and really enjoy! Here's a look at what I got to sample the other day.

Enter the pink building on your right as you make your way up toward Kalihi Valley and here is your taco shop. Menu above and specials on the left. You can order ala carte or get a meal with rice and beans. Ala carte the burrito will cost you $6-9.50, tacos $2.50-3.50 and quesadillas are $5-8.

Here's a taco trio plate with rice and beans. The tacos come in carnitas, carne asada, beef and veggie.

I got the veggie burrito, which was a little on the small side. I could hold it with my one hand if I wanted. The ingredients were beans, rice, cheese, onions, cilantro and it was delicious. very simple, yet very tasty. $6
Picture
The carnitas burrito was slightly bigger with meat inside. Also very tasty and perfectly seasoned pork. $7.50

Outstanding were the sauces, made fresh and full of flavor. They weren't hot sauce that you put on something to mask the taste and burn your mouth, they were delicious and complimented every bite. I liked to use the green sauce and the dark red sauce on everything!

I could've stopped eating after the burrito and I would've been ok, but we went ahead and ordered some tacos too. Out of all the flavors I thought the beef was the best tasting. It didn't need any sauce or anything added to it. Simply yummy. Now we are super duper FULL!
Venture into the heart of Kalihi Valley and check it out, you'll be glad you did!                                                              Alejandro's Mexican

Wood & Bucket breakfast buffet in Waikiki

A newly renovated restaurant nestled in Waikiki offers delectable tapas, treats, lunch, dinner and a $12.95 ($6.95 for children) breakfast buffet.

Wood & Bucket is a gorgeous new restaurant. I am going to call it new, even though it's not really, as it was recently renovated and opened a while ago, but it's new to me and probably you too. Located on Kanekapolei and Ala Wai Boulevard it's literally on the outskirts of Waikiki in the Waikiki Sand Villa Hotel. This charming boutique hotel is beautiful with simple elegant and tropics touches. The restaurant is located immediately to your right once you enter past the free valet. They serve breakfast from 6am-10am and yes, it's only $12.95. You won't find eggs benedict or French crepes, but there's a good amount of staple dishes like waffles or french toast, omelette station and etc. Here is a look at the grub.
Picture
The restaurant is beautiful, open-air, cool and has a rustic, trendy vibe. Service is attentive yet authentically local.
Picture
The buffet starts with fresh mesclun greens, fresh cut fruits, yogurt and a variety of toppings for the salad.
Picture
The made-to-order omelette station includes cheese, tomatoes, onions, mushrooms, and spinach. The omelette was perfectly cooked and delicious. There's also miso soup to enjoy for our Japanese guests who like that staple in the morning.
Picture
Hearty additions on the spread include tater tots (nice touch) link sausage, portuguese sausage, fried rice, scrambled eggs and sautéed veggies.

The manager told me the night before there was waffles on the buffet, but that day they had french toast. It was good and also come with strawberry or creamy banana topping. I had two.
The buffet also include fruit juices and coffee. For the price of one entree at any eatery around you can enjoy a nice peaceful buffet. The quality is good, the atmosphere is delightful and the food is tasty and filling. I figured I would give it a try since it was so cheap and it filled me up all day, but I didn't feel like I overate.
